Older Dogs

Inflammatory markers increase as dogs age just as they do in people. Chronic Inflammation is part of all kinds of nasty things (cancers, et al), so we want to push anti-inflammatory foods and supplements. We want to do that for all dogs, but especially the older ones. I could show you a zillion foods, herbs, and products that may help, but these are the basics. I didn’t include acidophilus in the collage, but only because it actually depends a lot on what the diet includes to begin with. For most dogs, I want acidophilus 2-3 x weekly.

Broccoli (both raw and cooked are great)
Antioxidant Booster (click the link and scroll to the Description to read about the study)

Red cabbage

CoQ10 (the dry version is cheaper, and an excellent quality one that you add to food which contains any fat at all helps absorption) for the immune system, heart, and oral health

Quest D-Mannose with cranberry ( only! this product helped my Tori, and a lot of client’s dogs)

Egg – because it’s the highest quality protein on the planet, and older dogs actually need more high quality protein then younger dogs.

Joint Complex

Berries (blue, black, red)

Kale

Wild Salmon Oil in capsules please, and always knowing the vitamin D content, and that it’s been tested for impurities and heavy metals.

Ginger – not for every dog, but yes, for many. It depends on the dog’s basic constitution. Still, this is one to keep in mind.

Taurine for all dogs, please. It’s fantastic for older dogs, and can benefit the heart, eyes, and more.

Sardines – good for omega 3 fatty acids, but canned ones are high in sodium, so I use them as part of an overall plan.

Brussels sprouts, and cauliflower – anti-cancer foods!

DECAF green tea. Must be decaf for dogs. It’s a fantastic anti-inflammatory and can help cognition. For more information on Life Stages, click here.
